Oil: The Essential Need [a blog post by Billy Humphrey from the International House of Prayer-Atlanta]

Oil: The Essential Need

Do you have oil? What I mean is, do you have oil in the Matthew 25 sense?

In the parable of the 10 virgins, Jesus makes it crystal clear that the essential need of the church at the end of the age is...oil. It's kind of a strange thought when taken at face value. Perhaps other things jump to mind as critical components for our life at the end of the age... i.e. Faith, Anointing, Power, Evangelism, Mercy, Perseverance, etc... Instead, the essential need of the church at the end of the age is oil.

If oil is critical, essential for us to obtain, it begs the question...Do you have it? How much do you have? Enough? Enough to keep your lamp burning brightly at midnight, the darkest hour? How do you know?

The context of the parable helps us to grasp it's full import. Jesus spoke it to His disciples as part of the Olivet Discourse, His key teaching about the end of the age. When asked about the signs of His coming, Jesus gave specific indicators(Mat 24) that would mark the season of His return. He then gave some parables to depict the nature of things at the time of His Second Coming. The Parable of the 10 virgins depicts the status of the church in that season.

In the parable He contrasts those whom He calls foolish with those He calls wise. What's the difference? The wise prepared and bought enough oil to keep their lamps burning at the darkest hour of the night, while the fools are found unprepared, unable to sustain their flame.

A few verses earlier Jesus stated that many will be offended, their love growing cold, because of the persecution they will face at the end of the age (Mat 24:12-13). Here in the parable He portrays love growing cold by the picture of the foolish virgins' lamps burning out.

So what's the point? The virgins represent Christians. The oil represents intimacy with Jesus. The Bridegroom is Jesus. The flame in the lamps represents a Christians' life in God. The simple, yet penetrating truth is this: those with a depth of intimacy with Jesus will be able to maintain a burning heart of passion in the darkest hour of human history, those without intimacy will not.

I am, once again, in recognition of my own need for oil. Rather than becoming busied with multiple pursuits or distracted even by good things, I feel the urgency to draw back, sit at His feet and hear His voice. Without intimacy with Jesus my Christianity is pale, thin, shallow. If my walk isn't passionately aflame because of the revelation of His love, what then is it made of? I don't want to do anything unless my heart is aflame with His passion and fire.

I am burdened by our habit in the church of busying ourselves with many events, activities, and meetings while we tend to neglect our first Love. We tend to value activity for God over intimacy with God. This practice will find us sorely lacking in a day of crisis.

How bout you, hows your oil? If you find that it's lacking, I urge you get oil while you can. Oil can be obtained only one way... you have to buy it(Mat 25:9-10). Buying oil is not striving or performing but rather pursuing God with a heart of longing to know Him intimately. Buying oil ultimately requires slowing down the activity of your life in order to engage in hours of loving devotion with the Lord.

Beloved, the essentiality of this issue cannot be overstated! Some may disdain a life that is 'wasted' at Jesus' feet. Oh, but how obvious the wisdom of that lifestyle will be when the chief need of the hour is oil! Know this, the hour is coming when it will be too late to get oil. Do it now. I encourage you seek the Lord while He may be found. Make the necessary changes to your schedule, to your lifestyle, that will translate into hours spent in long and loving devotion with the One who loved you first.

laughing with... [regina spektor]

No one laughs at God in a hospital
No one laughs at God in a war
No one’s laughing at God
When they’re starving or freezing or so very poor

No one laughs at God
When the doctor calls after some routine tests
No one’s laughing at God
When it’s gotten real late
And their kid’s not back from the party yet

No one laughs at God
When their airplane start to uncontrollably shake
No one’s laughing at God
When they see the one they love, hand in hand with someone else
And they hope that they’re mistaken

No one laughs at God
When the cops knock on their door
And they say we got some bad news, sir
No one’s laughing at God
When there’s a famine or fire or flood

*Chorus*
But God can be funny
At a cocktail party when listening to a good God-themed joke, or
Or when the crazies say He hates us
And they get so red in the head you think they’re ‘bout to choke
God can be funny,
When told he’ll give you money if you just pray the right way
And when presented like a genie who does magic like Houdini
Or grants wishes like Jiminy Cricket and Santa Claus
God can be so hilarious
Ha ha
Ha ha

No one laughs at God in a hospital
No one laughs at God in a war
No one’s laughing at God
When they’ve lost all they’ve got
And they don’t know what for

No one laughs at God on the day they realize
That the last sight they’ll ever see is a pair of hateful eyes
No one’s laughing at God when they’re saying their goodbyes
But God can be funny
At a cocktail party when listening to a good God-themed joke, or
Or when the crazies say He hates us
And they get so red in the head you think they’re ‘bout to choke
God can be funny,
When told he’ll give you money if you just pray the right way
And when presented like a genie who does magic like Houdini
Or grants wishes like Jiminy Cricket and Santa Claus
God can be so hilarious

No one laughs at God in a hospital
No one laughs at God in a war
No one laughs at God in a hospital
No one laughs at God in a war
No one laughing at God in hospital
No one’s laughing at God in a war
No one’s laughing at God when they’re starving or freezing or so very
poor

No one’s laughing at God
No one’s laughing at God
No one’s laughing at God
We’re all laughing with God

I am jealous for you...

My child,
You may not know me, but I know everything about you (Ps 139:1). I know when you sit down and when you rise up (Ps 139:2). I am familiar with all your ways (Ps 139:3), even the very hairs on your head are numbered (Matt. 10:29-31). For you were made in MY image (Gen 1:27). In ME you live and move and have your being (Acts 17:28), for you are MY offspring (Acts 17:28). I knew you even before you were conceived (Jer. 1:4-5). I chose you when I planned creation (Eph 1:11-12). You were not a mistake, for all your days were written in my book (Ps 139:15-16). I determined the exact time of your birth and where you would live (Acts 17:26). You are fearfully and wonderfully made (Ps 139:14). I knit you together in your mother's womb (Ps 139:13), and brought you forth on the day you were born (Ps 71:6). I have been misrepresented by those who don't know me (John 8:41-44). I am NOT distant and angry, but I am the complete expression of love (1 John 4:16), and it is my desire to lavish my love on you (1 John 3:1) simply because you were my child and I am your Father (1 John 3:1). I offer you more than your earthly father ever could (Matt 7:11). For I am the perfect Father (Matt 5:48). Every good gift that you receive comes from my hand (James 1:17), for I AM your provider and I meet ALL your needs (Matt 6:31-33). My plan for your future has always been filled with hope (Jer 29:11) because I love you with an EVERLASTING love (Jer 31:3). My thoughts toward you are countless as the sand on the seashore (Ps 139:17-18) and I rejoice over you with singing (Zeph 3:17). I will NEVER stop doing good to you (Jer 32:40) for you are my treasured possession (Ex 19:5). I desire to establish you with ALL my heart and soul (Jer 32:41) and I want to show you great and marvelous things (Jer 33:3). If you seek me with all you heart, you will find me (Deut 4:29). Delight in me and I will give you the desires of your heart (Ps 37:4) for it is I who gave you those desires (Phil 2:13). I am able to do more for than you could possibly imagine (Eph 3:20) for I am your greatest encourager (2 Thess 2:16-17). I am also the Father who comforts you in all your troubles (2 Cor 1:3-4). when you are brokenhearted, I am close to you (Ps 34:18). As a shepherd carries a lamb, I have carried you close to my heart (Is 40:11). One day I will wipe away ever tear from your eyes (Rev 21:3-4), and I will take away all the pain you have suffered on this earth (Rev 21:3-4). I am your Father, and I love you even as I love my Son, Jesus (John 17:23). For in Jesus, my love for you is revealed (John 17:26). He is the exact representation of my being (Heb 1:3). He came to demonstrate that I am for you, not against you (Rom 8:31), and to tell you that I am not counting your sins (2 Cor 5:18-19). Jesus died so that you and I could be reconciled (2 Cor 5:18-19). His death was the ultimate expression of my love for you (1 John 4:10). I gave up everything I loved that I might gain your love (Rom 8:31-32). If you receive the gift of my son Jesus, you receive me (1 John 2:23), and NOTHING will ever separate you from my love again (Rom 8:38-39). Come home and I will throw the biggest party heaven has ever seen (Luke 15:7). I have always been Father, and I will always be Father (Eph 3:14-15). My question is, will you be my child (John 1:12-13)? I am waiting for you (Luke 15:11-32).
Love: Your Abba, Almighty God, Dad

pray. laugh. love.

Lately my life has been full of these three things.
Prayer: I've been praying fervently for friends who love and care about me and my needs, for someone to spend my life with, and to make it through this semester with straight A's.
Laughter: Laughter comes easily for me. My friends bless me with hilarious situations and comments. It is such a blessing. In Proverbs is says that laughter is good medicine. I truly believe that with all my heart. I have been such a happy person. Laughter is what keeps me out of the darkness and what reminds me that God is good all the time.
Love: This is the hard one. Love. In my prayers I have been asking what is love? I have no idea. Is it just a strong emotional attachment to someone? Is it a strong physical attraction to someone? Is it seeking yourself first in a relationship? What is love? All I see around me is a selfish love for self in the world. It's rough for me to see. I would give my life for any of my friends or my family. I give everything and feel like I receive nothing. I feel like you guys are reading this thinking wow she's full of crap. But really, if you are my friend you should know that I would give anything for you and would be there for you through anything.

Anyway.... I'm done ranting. I'm learning lessons. God is working in my life. This semester will be a blessing.

LOVE! LOVE!

Christmas Break

Ugh. Me and breaks have a love/hate relationship. I love the no school and classes and stress part, but I'm not a fan of the going home to Springdale. There are all of 3 people that I hang out with when I come home and I love them, but really? I'm so sick of being bored. I like being busy and having things to do.
I miss my friends so much. HU has been such a wonderful blessing & this semester has been the best thus far. I have so many new friendships and so many new opportunities that are so exciting to me. I LOVE IT.
... & then I come home for a month and fight with my family. Not fun.

all praises be to the Lord from whom all blessing flow...

I haven't updated since AUGUST! Nuts. I'm really sorry I have neglected my responsibility to the blogger world. Every time I check my site and say, "hey, maybe I will post today." I can never come up with something worth posting that isn't too emo, will offend someone, or I'm just too lazy to take the time to post.

I guess today I had a change of heart. . I decided not to be lazy and actually say something... (this might be because it is almost 2am and I cannot seem to fall asleep).

What has happened in Fall of 2010?
1. I'm getting my tonsils removed. FINALLY! November 17th I say "goodbye, till it be morrow.." I'm slightly excited and yet really nervous for this to happen. 1 of 2 things can happen. a.) I will have the surgery and get REALLY sick or b.) I will have the surgery and be fine in a couple of days. I'm hoping the later of the two happens. :)
2. I have made new and wonderful friends. Its been exciting to see my life this semester. God has richly blessed me with a drama free group of people that are in my life just to lift me up and support me in everything. It has been wonderful!
3. I've been involved with the musical. All I have to say is I'm glad I gave it a go, but it will never happen again. The best/worst experience of my life. Ha.
4. I'M IN THE SOCIAL WORK PROGRAM! Its official, I'm going to be a social worker. :) I'm oober excited about this!! My advisor and other faculty in the department love me and are so encouraging. I'll be graduating in Spring of 2013, but it is worth it to learn about my new mission field.
5. DELTA GAMMA RHO! We just inducted a new pledge class. They are a group of wonderful and sweet girls! I am so absolutely glad that God blessed us with some wonderful girls this semester!
6. ADDISON IS ENGAGED! I could not be anymore excited for her and Cory! Its sad that I'm not meeting him until the wedding, but still. I know that he is wonderful for her and I am so glad that she is happy with him. I'm also excited that I am getting to be a bridesmaid for her. I am absolutely elated that I get to be there for her and witness her marriage to Cory! It makes my heart happy that she has found someone worth her love and someone that loves and takes care of her. She deserves nothing but the best.

I am sure there are other things that are note worthy that have happened this semester, but that is all I have for now.

Love you! & God bless!

the marriage factory.

I go to Harding... aka "The Marriage Factory."
I have just moved in with two girls who are newly engaged. Woo. This is going to be one interesting semester for one who is currently single, and will probably maintain this status for a long while. This is my first night with both of them... I'm not quite sure where my roommate is, but like she would be any help in distracting me from the wedding planning in the next room.
First thing they did when they saw each other was compare rings, which then led to when/where/what colors/who are the bridesmaids&groomsmen/"oh my goodness he did good!" I know I sound bitter when I talk about this kind of stuff, but really its because I'm single. And what's worse is I know what I currently want... its just being patient and waiting for the relationship to go somewhere is frustrating me.
I feel like a little girl when I over hear their planning. It gets me thinking, if I were in their shoes what would I do? And in all of the time that I've had to think I am pretty sure I know what I want my wedding to look like and kind of where I want it. Weird considering I'm single. I've caught myself talking about this kind of stuff with some of my closest friends... which, again, is weird considering we are single.
Its fun when I have so many people around me that are engaged because I get to hear their ideas and such and get excited with them that they are getting married, but this is going into a down hill slump fast. Ugh, when is my turn? :( haha. I know I'm such a baby. Patience, Neely!! One day God will put someone in your life that will sweep you off your feet and treat you wonderfully and you will be happy and have married fights over adult things and you will be content. I think that's just want I want right now is to be content. I'm not content at all, I'm always ready for the next thing to happen. Ready to jump the gun. I think that's part of the reason I can't hold a relationship for more that like, a month, or 2 months... Guys don't want a girl that already knows what she wants and when she wants it. Guys like to make the calls. But why don't they step up to the plate and do something about it? Ugh! Frustrating.
I want to be pursued. I want a guy to work hard to get me. I want him to start conversations and to want to learn new things about me. I want someone that gives me butterflies and make my heart smile. I feel like I found someone that does that, that makes me feel content, but low and behold he doesn't seem to want to pursue me. It kind of breaks my heart a little.

Well, I guess I'm done rambling for the night. Hope you enjoyed some insight into my brain.
